Mumps is an acute, contagious, generally benign viral infection characterized by inflammation of the parotid and other salivary glands. It is usually contracted during childhood and was considered endemic prior to widespread routine vaccination. Symptoms include chills, moderate fever, malaise, headache, and pain on chewing or swallowing related to the characteristic swelling of the parotid and sometimes the other salivary glands. Mumps has the potential to involve numerous other organs, including the pancreas, ovaries, and testes. Gonadal involvement is uncommon and generally only occurs in postpubertal patients, with permanent sterility being a rare complication. The course of the illness usually runs five to seven days. Additional Considerations
